Be The Change Award Trophy
My Hands, Our Change: The Story and Soul Behind the “Be The Change” Award Trophy
When Bacolod City launched the “Be The Change” Award, I was given a rare and humbling opportunity: to design a trophy that would not only honor our city’s changemakers but also capture the spirit of transformation, unity, and gratitude that defines our community. As an artist, I knew this was not just about creating a beautiful object. It was about telling a story—a story that would touch the hands and hearts of every recipient.
The Moment My Hands Became the Message | Be The Change Award Trophy
As the deadline approached, I found myself reflecting deeply on what it means to “be the change.” I looked at my own hands—hands that have built, created, comforted, and served. In a moment of clarity, I realized that these hands could be the very vessel for this message. Pressing my palms into the casting material, I felt a wave of vulnerability and pride. Every crease, every imperfection, became part of the story—a silent testament to the real, human effort behind every act of change. My hands, with all their flaws, would become the living mold for the trophy, carrying not just my story, but the story of every person who chooses to reach out and make a difference.
Materials and Meaning | Be The Change Award Trophy
The trophy is meticulously crafted from fiberglass, molded directly from my real palm to ensure authenticity and a true representation. Whether it’s the hand or palm chosen, each element is sculpted with precision, creating a lifelike 2D effect that captivates the observer. As I worked the fiberglass, I poured my intentions into every detail, wanting the trophy to feel alive, authentic, and deeply human.
Rendered with meticulous detail, the trophy shines with possibilities. It is finished in antique bronze, gold, and silver metallic paints, evoking a sense of tradition and heritage. Alternatively, a harmonious blend of silver, gold, and copper creates a captivating metallic finish, symbolizing timeless elegance and sophistication. Resting upon a sleek black base, the trophy strikes a bold contrast, accentuating the richness of the metallic tones above. As I painted each hand, I thought of the people I’ve met—leaders, volunteers, quiet workers—each one bringing their color to the tapestry of our city.
The Colors of Our Collective Strength | Be The Change Award Trophy
The different colors of the hands—gold, silver, and bronze—were chosen with intention and emotion:
- Gold for inspiration—the spark that ignites hope in others.
- Silver for collaboration—the beauty of diverse hands coming together.
- Bronze for perseverance—the courage to keep going, even when the world feels heavy.
Arranged together, these three hands form the letter “C”—a bold, visual metaphor for “Change.” As I arranged and painted each hand, I wanted every color to speak to someone’s story, to say:
“You are seen. You matter. You are part of this.” Their harmonious blend signifies that greatness is achieved not in isolation but through the coming together of unique individuals, united for a common purpose.
A Foundation of Gratitude | Be The Change Award Trophy
The hands rise from a sleek black base, grounding the trophy in gratitude and shared values. Each trophy is adorned with a gold citation plaque, adding a touch of refinement and prestige. As recipients proudly display this symbol of recognition, it becomes a cherished memento, reflecting their dedication and contribution over the years. Attaching each plaque, I imagined the pride and joy every recipient would feel, knowing their commitment had not gone unnoticed.
The Deeper Meaning: Strength in Unity | Be The Change Award Trophy
Delving deeper into its symbolism, the hands embodied in this trophy represent the collective participation of individuals, each hand a signature of commitment and volunteerism. The triumvirate of hands stands as a testament to strength, echoing the timeless wisdom of Ecclesiastes 4:12:
“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
As I assembled the trio of hands, I was reminded that each hand, a different color and story, yet together, is unbreakable. This is the heart of volunteerism and teamwork—the knowledge that we are strongest when we lift each other up.
A Beacon for the Future
As the embodiment of achievement and teamwork, this trophy stands as a beacon of inspiration, honoring those who strive for excellence and embody the spirit of unity. My greatest wish is that this trophy will not simply gather dust on a shelf. I hope it becomes a beacon—a daily reminder that every act of kindness, every effort to unite, and every moment of perseverance shapes a better Bacolod. May it serve as a lasting reminder of the profound impact individuals can achieve when they join hands in pursuit of a common goal.
My Hope for Every Recipient of the Be The Change Award Trophy
As both the artist and a fellow advocate for change, my most profound hope is that this trophy inspires every awardee to continue their journey of service, and that it reminds everyone who sees it that fundamental transformation begins with a single gesture—one hand, one act, and one change at a time.
This is my story, cast in bronze, silver, and gold. This is my hand, reaching out to yours, inviting you to be the change—today, tomorrow, and always.
Message of Gratitude:
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the City of Bacolod for placing their trust in us to design and create the “Be The Change” Award trophies. It has been an honor to contribute to a project that celebrates the spirit of transformation, unity, and service within our community.
A special thank you goes to Miss Carmela Gamboa for her unwavering support and exceptional facilitation throughout the entire process. Her dedication and guidance made this collaboration smooth and inspiring.
I sincerely hope that this meaningful endeavor continues to flourish and that the new administration will carry forward this legacy with the same passion and commitment. Together, may we continue to inspire and recognize those who choose to be the change for a better Bacolod.
Thank you once again for this incredible opportunity. It has been a privilege to be part of this journey.
