Why do Filipinos Choose to be Workers Overseas
I often wonder why a lot of Filipinos choose to work overseas even though the distance serves as a hindrance for them to be with the people they love. The first idea that I thought of is perhaps, the need to be able to support the family is so strong, so much so that they are compelled to work abroad. Being an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is not easy. There will always be challenges, but what are the possible reasons why they choose to do so? Let’s find out.
1. Great income opportunity
Admit it or not, the salary will always be higher abroad most especially for those that are doing menial or average jobs. For instance. A factory worker here may earn 12 thousand a month, while working abroad may give him about 40 to 80 thousand. See? With such a vast difference in terms of income, it is inevitable the Filipinos who would like to help their families will be enticed to grab the opportunity.
2. High employment rate overseas
There is always a need for workers abroad, whereas, in the country, there are jobs, but the competition is higher since a lot of people are competing to get the job. This is perhaps the reason why there is a higher unemployment rate in our country compared to the other countries since they have more active industries and productions which need workers.
3. Hopeless in terms of our country’s economic condition
The inflation rate, an increase in prices of almost everything. And the plaguing tax, all of these reasons are factors on why Filipinos choose to be expatriates. They have the feeling that things in our country continue to get worst and that affects them and their families in one way or another.
4. Pressure from the immediate environment
Since hardships are being experienced, people from the family or friends will at times pressure you to work abroad. They will make you feel that it is already very needed and that it is the only answer in solving the financial problems that you might have been experiencing.
5. Professional growth
One might feel that he/she is not anymore growing and that he/she needs a new environment where his/her capabilities, skills and overall ability to work can be enhanced. By working overseas, they feel that they are once more empowered to work on their professional skills and capabilities.
6. Local discrimination when applying for a job
The compadrazgo system in the country makes it a toiling ground for discrimination. An applicant may be hired because of his name, or friends, or also known as a backer. Whereas a competent worker may not be employed because he does not know anyone from the inside. Thus, discrimination if work is higher.
7. Travel galore
Why not work and at the same time, enjoy the culture and tradition of the new place? The travel experience itself is enticing! Not only you will earn a much higher salary, but you can also experience a different lifestyle and join new adventures in life.
8. Support of the OFW by the Government
The government acknowledges the fact that OFW is a massive help in the economy of the country. So, they create such programs and services to these people since they know that they also bring a lot to their country.
9. Local entrepreneurs are not that supported
There are times that through the government are giving high importance to OFWs, the local entrepreneurs and industries are not considering domestic workers. Thus, it forces the Filipino workers to look for better opportunities abroad. The attitude of the local entrepreneurs and industries towards local applicants is that they are supposed to wait for quite some time.
10. Long-time dream
Hey might have seen someone as an OFW before and they love the idea of being one, or they might have seen the situation of OFW workers on a movie or other media, and they are fascinated about it since a younger age. Now that they are grown up, they would like to fulfill such long-time dream to be an OFW.
11. Being attuned with the trend
Being an OFW has been a trend, and a lot of Filipinos might want to be part of that trend so that they could help their respective families. Thus, joining the trend in working abroad becomes the solution to the financial struggles that they are facing.
Being an OFW is not easy. That is why we have also to recognize the hardships and sacrifices of these workers who do their best to lift the status of their loved ones here and to help the country in general.
